Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Make Breast Self-Checks Part Of Your Routine

20 Years of Beautiful Connection with BCNA

This year marks Sussan’s 20th year of partnership with Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), helping ensure that every woman affected by breast cancer receives the care, connection and support they need.

Together, with our incredible customers, we’ve contributed more than $3.3 million for BCNA’s vital work.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re proud to support BCNA’s latest campaign — Know Yourself. Feel Yourself.
Every day, 58 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, BCNA is encouraging women to know their normal by giving their breasts more mirror time. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women aged 20–39. The better you know your body, the sooner you’ll notice when something has changed — and early detection saves lives.

Sussan x BCNA: Empower yourself with breast awareness

As part of their Know Yourself. Feel Yourself. campaign, BCNA has launched a new educational self-check film, designed to help women learn how to check their breasts with knowledge and confidence. It’s simple, supportive and can be done in just a few minutes — anywhere, anytime.

To support this important message, we are introducing breast self-check mirror decals in every fitting room nationwide. We hope these serve as a gentle reminder to take a moment for yourself, prioritise your health and make regular breast self-checks part of your routine.

Get to know your normal

Every woman’s body is different.
Your breasts might be lumpy, uneven, or change throughout your cycle. What matters most is knowing what’s normal for you, so you can feel confident about noticing what’s not.

There’s no right or wrong way to check, but here are some simple steps to get you started.

Remove your top and bra and stand in front of a mirror with your arms by your sides, then above your head and then on your hips. Like your face, your breasts tell a story. Notice what’s usual for you and watch for anything new.

With one arm raised, use flat fingers to feel every part of your breast with light,

medium and firm pressure. Don’t forget to check under your breasts, behind your nipple, your armpits, and up to your collarbone. You’re checking for changes such as new lumps, swelling or unusual pain.

Your breasts can feel different before, during, and after your period – so check at different times of the month, too.

And if you notice anything that looks or feels unusual for you, make an appointment with your healthcare professional, without delay.

What to look for

While lumps can be one sign, there are many other changes to be aware of:

  • A change in the shape or size of your breast
  • Irritation or dimpling of the breast skin
  • An indent or puckering when you lift your arms
  • A rash, redness or flakiness on your breast or nipple
  • A nipple that suddenly inverts
  • A lump or swelling in your breast or underarm
  • Pain in any area of your breast that is unusual or ongoing

Most changes aren’t cancer,  but it’s always best to get them checked by a healthcare professional as soon as possible.
