For over 85 years, Sussan has been celebrating the spirit of Australian women. Our 'For Women. By Women.' series highlights the remarkable women behind the brand, whose creativity and expertise shape everything we do.

Meet Maddy from our Buying Team, and one of the many women shaping what joy looks like at Sussan. Her work ensures women feel great in what they wear, with considered fits, thoughtful details and colour that sparks confidence.
This month, we spoke with Maddy about the inspiration behind new-season pieces, the power of supportive women at work and the simple rituals that help her find joy.

Tell us about your role at Sussan—what does an average workday look like for you?

As a Buyer at Sussan, my role contributes to the products we deliver to our customers. I'm involved in designing and developing new styles and trends that reflect what our customers love and look for each season. It's exciting to see ideas come to life and become part of the collections that inspire confidence and style in the women who wear them.

What's something about your role that would surprise people?

We start working on collections about six months prior to them being delivered into stores or online. When you see a new style launch, a lot of thought, consideration, and tweaks have gone into it along the way. Fabrics, colours, and fit all change throughout this process, from idea to delivery, to ensure we create styles that customers will love.

What do you hope women feel when they step into a Sussan store or shop with us online?

I hope our customers feel welcome and understood. Fit, feel and look are huge considerations in my role, and ensuring these are all right on each style will also help customers feel great, too!

What does 'For Women. By Women.' mean to you in the context of your work?

The Sussan team is made up of women who are all so talented. I'm so grateful to come to work and spend every day with such an amazing team of supportive women, all working towards a goal of making women feel great.

What is the best piece of advice you have received from another woman?

To be kind and treat others how you would like to be treated.

How has working at Sussan shaped your style?

I am always quite considered with what I purchase, and I like to ensure that each piece can work back with the pieces already in my wardrobe.
Each collection at Sussan is filled with vibrant prints and energetic colours, while also being balanced with our amazing Everyday Icons, which are our staple wardrobe building essentials and perfect for the way I like to dress and shop.
I usually gravitate towards black and neutrals, but I have found that I am experimenting with more prints and colours lately, which is definitely the brand rubbing off on me!

What's a small ritual or reset that helps you unwind at the end of the day?

A long walk, a hot bath and Netflix!

This month, our campaign is Bring the Joy. How do you like to spread joy and celebrate the women around you this time of year?

I love this time of year – the weather is warming up and there is an exciting energy and feeling in the air! Spending time with close friends and family is my ideal way to spread joy: an afternoon drink with my best friend or a home-cooked meal at my parents’ house.

What colours, fabrics, or accessories are currently bringing joy to your wardrobe?

I'm absolutely loving the Linen Ruffle Dress in red. There is nothing that screams summer and Christmas time more than the perfect red dress!

Between all the plans and celebrations this time of year, how do you carve out time to rest, recharge and find joy for yourself?

The weeks leading up to Christmas are jam-packed, so even something small, like walking to get a takeaway coffee or taking a solo trip to Chadstone, is my ideal way to relax and recharge.

If you could tell the women wearing Sussan one thing—about your work or why you do it—what would it be?

As a buyer, we are always listening and learning from the Sussan customer – what she likes or what she doesn't.
It feels great when we deliver styles that our customers love, can feel great in and be worn for seasons to come.
