Here, we catch up with Sarah, one of our talented sleepwear buying assistants, to uncover how creativity, connection, and care for the little details bring comfort to sleep. From managing fit sessions to styling advertising samples, her role blends fashion and function — ensuring every sleep set feels as good as it looks.
How does your role contribute to the world of Sussan?
As the sleepwear buying assistant, I contribute to the world of Sussan by helping with the design process of all gowns, loungewear, nighties, pyjamas and sleep accessories. From start to finish of each garment, I help with production and sample management, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
What does an average day look like in your role?
My average day starts with a morning coffee while reviewing the previous day’s report. I check what’s performing well and discuss it with my manager and team. Depending on the day, I prepare the fit list for our twice-weekly fit sessions, update our WIP documents to track production progress, and flag any concerns. I also refresh our range boards with any style changes, get advertising samples ready for upcoming shoots, and meet with suppliers to talk through current and future ranges.
What excites you most about your role?
Being so creative is one of the most exciting parts of the role. I have always been creative and love fashion, so it is a dream that I get to help create sleepwear for an iconic Australian brand. I also get excited about coming to work every day and seeing my team. Sharing new ideas is something that really excites me.
For me, it means working alongside so many incredible women and creating a product that makes women feel confident while keeping comfortable.
What have been your biggest learnings in your role?
That you never stop learning. After I graduated from university, I thought I was done learning, but it was just the beginning; I learn at least one new thing every day I come to work.
What is the best piece of advice you have received from another woman?
“Slow down to speed up” I always try to do everything at once at a fast pace, but slowing down to speed up has helped me be able to stay more on track with daily tasks both at home and at work, as well as keep more organised and get more done throughout the day.
How do you balance work and home life?
I balance my work and home life by making sure I switch off after the day; I aim to stay on top of my work and keep organised throughout the day so once it’s home time, I can log off for the day and feel satisfied that every task is done.
How do you unwind at the end of the workday?
I go to the gym for a run or walk my dog, Buddy. I also have a nice dinner and finish the day by reading a book before bed.
Who are the women you are inspired by?
My sisters are my biggest inspirations. Being the youngest by 7 years, they act more like mums — they are constantly supporting me in everything I do and are always the first people I go to for anything. My Nan was also a big inspiration to me. She was a very creative woman and loved all things fashion. Working in the industry and having such a love for fashion makes me feel like there is always a part of her with me.
This month, our campaign is Days of Serenity. How will you embrace a slow start to the year this summer?
Trying to have more ‘me time’ is a focus this year. I want to try and slow down and take each day as it comes.
Is there a small ritual or habit you want to incorporate into your everyday life this year?
I plan to journal at least once a week to keep my head clear and calm, even at the busiest times of the year!
What’s your go-to outfit for a relaxed, serene summer day?
My go-to relaxation outfit is a pair of linen pants and a casual top or my favourite pyjamas, especially for lounging around. I am currently loving our Ditsy shortie set, which is perfect for a hot day as it’s made from our lightweight Ecovero fabrication.
