For over 85 years, Sussan has been celebrating the spirit of Australian women. Our 'For Women. By Women.' series highlights the remarkable women behind the brand, whose creativity and expertise shape everything we do.
This month, we caught up with our Sleepwear Buyer, Stephanie.
Designing for the moments we unwind, reset and recharge, she brings a thoughtful, considered approach to every piece. Here, she shares how listening to our customer and designing with care helps create sleepwear that truly supports women, night after night.
Tell us about your role at Sussan—how does it contribute to Sussan’s story, and what does an average workday look like for you?
I’ve recently joined Sussan as the Buyer for Sleepwear!
No two days are the same for me. Mondays are all about trade performance, deep diving into sales and analysing what our customer is loving and looking for from us. We use these learnings to shape future ranges and ensure we continue delivering the best possible sleepwear collections.
The buying role is all about developing and creating quality, attainable product for our customer, with a lot of strategy and analysis behind what we do!
Most days include liaising with suppliers, who are truly an extension of our team. This involves discussing production and working through any product issues that may arise.
Other days, I’m fitting sleepwear garments, approving fabrics and trims, reviewing trends, collaborating on prints and designs with our Graphic Designer, and ranging new season product.
My role also involves mentoring and developing our Buying Assistant, which is something I’m really passionate about. I think it’s so important to share knowledge and support team members as they grow within the industry.
My role contributes to Sussan’s story by creating product with our customer at the centre of every decision — truly understanding what women want, listening to feedback and delivering the best possible product and experience.
What’s something about your role that would surprise people?
We wear-test new fabrications and sleep in them (outside of work hours!) to understand how they feel and whether they perform to expectation.
Sleepwear is all about comfort and quality, so it’s important we’re constantly learning from and improving our ranges.

What do you hope women feel when they step into a Sussan store or shop with us online?
I hope women feel confident, valued and seen when they step into a Sussan store or shop online, knowing there’s something for them, whether through our product designs, size ranges or the support of our amazing staff.
Creating an inclusive experience is so important, and ultimately, we want every customer to walk away feeling positive and confident in their purchase.
What does “For Women. By Women.” mean to you in the context of your work?
“For Women. By Women.” means truly understanding who our customer is, what she values and translating that into both our product and the experience we create.
It’s about understanding the different seasons of women’s lives and ensuring we reflect that in what we design and deliver for our customers.
How has working at Sussan shaped your style or approach to getting dressed?
Working at Sussan has shaped my style by encouraging me to feel confident in who I am and embrace this new season of life as a mum, which has shifted how I approach getting dressed.
These days, my approach is all about comfort, confidence and ease because most days, time is not on my side!
I gravitate towards quality investment pieces, mix-and-match styling and building a capsule wardrobe, while also experimenting with trends that resonate with me and make me feel good.

This month, our campaign is Nurture. What has a woman in your life taught you about nurturing?
It may sound cliché, but my mum has taught me so much about nurturing. She is a pillar of strength, incredibly selfless and someone who has dedicated so much of herself to raising her three daughters, which certainly hasn’t always been easy.
My mum continues to teach me about nurture through the support she shows my husband and me as we raise our own children. Whether it’s helping when the kids are sick, cooking meals during the week to make life a little easier, or simply always being there for us.
I hope that through her nurturing, she knows she’s passed on her caring and protective nature to me.
How do you make sure you also nurture yourself? What’s a small ritual of self-care in your day that helps you pause, unwind or recharge?
I’ve recently started investing more time in my skincare routine. It’s only five minutes each day, but it’s a small moment to nurture myself and do something that makes me feel good.
With two little ones and working full-time, finding time for self-care isn’t always easy, but I’ve learnt it’s the small rituals that matter in this season of life.
Which piece from the new collection would you reach for if you wanted to feel more grounded and present in your day?
I’m loving the Limited-Edition Wrap Scarf Coat; the fit is incredible, and I love that the scarf is detachable.
For me, clothing that fits well is so important because it instantly helps you feel confident and comfortable, and this coat does just that.
How has working at Sussan shaped your style or approach to getting dressed?
Working for Sussan has really changed the way I think about my clothes—what they’re made from, where they come from, and their impact on the environment. It’s taught me the value of sustainable fibres and encouraged me to make small, more conscious changes to my wardrobe, like choosing Australian cotton and traceable linens.
This month, our campaign Here & Now is all about slowing down and being present. What’s something small in your day that helps you pause and enjoy the moment?
I’ve recently made an effort to do something small for myself before work, whether it’s grabbing a coffee with my husband, going to Pilates, or taking a walk at sunrise. It gives me a moment to reset before the day begins, helping me stay present, slow down, and prioritise time for myself.
Which piece from the new collection would you reach for if you wanted to feel more grounded and present in your day?
I’d be reaching for the Australian Cotton Poplin Shirt, it’s comfortable and easy to layer going into these cooler months.
If you could tell the woman wearing Sussan one thing, what would it be?
That I hope our pieces bring her as much joy as they brought us creating them. Seeing Sussan out in the world always makes me smile.
